A Message from the Mayor

Welcome to the Town of Elk Point website. Elk Point (map) is the "The Right Place To Be." As Mayor, I would like to extend a personal invitation to you to visit us anytime.

The Town of Elk Point , with a present population of over 1500, is located in the Northeastern part of Alberta and was incorporated as a Town in 1962.

The Town is situated on Highway 41 approximately 250 km East of Edmonton. Elk Point has a full range of services. The Town's economic base is defined by agriculture, gas and oil, salt plant, manufacturing trusses and tourism.

We are especially proud of the fact that 2007 was our Centennial Year. However, our history dates back much further, to the days of the fur trade when our nearby twin forts (Fort George and Buckingham House) were the first settlement on the North Saskatchewan River. From this statement, you can see that we are proud of our heritage.

When you come to visit us, you will be mesmerized by the beauty of our lakes and the rolling hills surrounding Elk Point. You will also find a rich history of the area from the Fort George Buckingham House Provincial Site to our 32 foot chainsaw carved statue of Peter Fidler guarding our north entrance. In the Town of Elk Point just behind the Library is a 100 foot long historical mural painted by a local artist, where colorful images of the past trace local history from the Northwest Rebellion to the present.

We have great recreational facilities and an active group of volunteers. We have a staging area at the Iron Horse Trail, which is a part of the Trans Canada Trail System.

We also have two top notch education institutions; the Elk Point Elementary School and the F.G. Miller Jr/Sr High School. We also have an active Health Facility with two doctors. Our medical needs are indeed well served. As a matter of fact, I can promise you that anyone can get an appointment with our doctors within TWO Days!! We also have an excellent young dentist in town.

Further, our town has changed over the years: from agricultrual base to a mix of resource and agriculture that makes it the hub of the Lakeland region. I am proud to say that we are at the centre of an economic boom due to natural resources.

However, we are also boastful of our identity as a "Safe and Caring Town" where we all are neighbours, and where we have first class facilities for our seniors.

At present, we are in the midst of an expansion phase due to the expected influx of workers. We welcome such a population increase, and are developing affordable lots which will have one of the lowest prices within this region. We now have incentives for new building initiatives in the form of a TWO YEAR PROPERTY TAX BREAK!

We also have an active Chamber of Commerce and an Economic Development Committee.

Yes! We are open for Business. Do come and visit us soon.
